The first non-native settlers arrived in the area in 1877 and the town was named after the deer that grazed along the river. In 1881, Henry M. Flagler expanded the Florida East Coast Railroad from Miami to the coast to make Deerfield Beach more accessible, making it the first station in the state of Florida.
The railroad opened up the tropical wilderness that ran parallel to the Atlantic coast, which was then inhabited by Seminole Indians who lived more inland. As mentioned before, the Seminoles were the only inhabitants of the Deerfield Beach area, but they lived inland and not in the area.
